“As a theater artist I was inspired to find MAX by the disconnect between the science/technology disciplines and performance that I experienced during some early interdisciplinary experiments I directed in the early 2010’s. Simultaneously, the discoveries in science and tech were creeping into every aspect of our lives and beginning to run us rather than the other way around.
In response, I started to imagine a world where artists could tap into these innovations that constantly rock our world, rather than feeling overwhelmed by them and, thereby, have a voice about the direction things were going. I had witnessed a decline in attendees at live art events throughout my life and wondered if we simply needed to create more work related to what was really effecting people of all walks of life, i.e., science and technology, the drivers of the zeitgeist. Let’s figure out a way for artists to enhance their creative expression with these innovation, take a seat at the table critiquing these massive changes, and connect to larger audiences. It seemed like a win-win-win. It has been in many ways; we have forged new forms, catalyzed many collaborations between world renowned scientists and brilliant artists to create groundbreaking, moving work that sheds light on the path forward.
There is more and more to be concerned about every day. We hope to chip away at the antipathy and helplessness instilled by these massive changes by engaging audiences with sublime combinations of dance, music, storytelling, virtual world building, and interactive connectivity. Through greater awareness humanity can re-assert its role as the caretakers of the planet. We hope to fill the cup of artistic experience until it runneth over, the audience defenses dissolve and the horizon opens up to a better world.”
